Glendale Kia Partners With Universal Studios Hollywood for Halloween Horror Nights Event

Glendale Kia announces its official presenting sponsorship of "Chucky's Funhouse" Maze at Universal Studios Hollywood's Halloween Horror Nights.

Universal Studios Hollywood's Halloween Horror Nights(R) is Southern California's most terrifying Halloween event and the most intense "live" horror event ever staged within a theme park environment. Remaining dates are October 28-31. The event begins nightly at 7:00 p.m.; closing hours vary by night throughout the event. Tickets are on sale at www.universalstudioshollywood.com/hhn.

Integrations at this year's Halloween Horror Nights include a decorated Kia Soul vehicle installation at the Chucky's Funhouse maze, which allows guests to get up close and personal with the all-new 2010 Kia Soul.

"Halloween Horror Nights is an ideal setting to reach Kia Soul's target demographic," said Stephanie Testa, vice president of corporate alliances of Universal Studios Partnerships & Licensing. "Glendale Kia and Universal are deploying numerous experiential marketing activations such as 'Test Drive & Win' ticket promotions, online on the Halloween Horror Nights Web site and a mobile application to help drive consumers to Glendale Kia."

In March 2009, Kia rolled out the all-new 2010 Kia Soul urban passenger vehicle. Soul stands out from the crowd with modern, unique styling aimed toward the young and young-at-heart. Designed by Kia Motors' Southern California-based design team, Soul is currently on sale at Glendale Kia, the #1 Volume Kia Dealer in California for three straight years.

"Glendale Kia strives to connect with our consumers and what better way than sponsoring an amusing and spirited event as Chucky's Funhouse at Universal Studios Hollywood Halloween Horror Nights," said Pete Mehrabian, General Manager of Glendale Kia. "The creativity and excitement behind the launch of Kia's all-new 2010 Soul fits perfectly with the imagination and thrill behind this popular Southern California Halloween event."

This year's all new Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios features four new maze experiences, including Saw: Game Over; Halloween: The Life and Crimes of Michael Myers; My Bloody Valentine: Be Mine 4 Ever; and Chucky's Funhouse, six new scare zones; a new live stage performance of The Rocky Horror Picture Show: A Tribute; and a re-imagined Terror Tram backlot studio experience.

Trio arrested with counterfeit bills at Carowinds

Nov. 3--SHELBY -- With a coupon, you might luck out and get into Carowinds for under $30. But a trio of local residents managed to land a free ride on Saturday -- to jail, according to police.

Police that day arrested Arhtiando Phillips, 21, of Shelby, Sharod Mitchell, 19, of Forest City, and Sarah Colon, 19, of Cherryville. Witnesses say the group used fake $20 bills at the amusement park's games, and a York County Sheriff's Office representative said possibly more than 30 of them were spent.

The three were charged with forgery and criminal conspiracy, according to authorities.

Police there say the suspects deny involvement. Deputies found $1,175 on the group and two of the original bills that had been duplicated were among the cash found, police said.

Deputies also found evidence in Colon's car in the parking lot, officials said.

Inspectors Pick 13 Favorite Haunted Hideaways for Halloween

As costumed monsters, superheroes, and creatures of the night take to the streets in search of candy, many Americans will seek a good scare at theme parks, parties and eerie locations. In anticipation of the occasion, AAA polled its professional inspectors for their favorite haunted hotels and restaurants, garnering the 13 top picks below (see also AAA).

To complement the list, two inspectors share their tales of encounters with the supernatural on AAA's travel blog at AAATravelViews.com, keyword Haunted.

1886 Crescent Hotel & Spa, Eureka Springs, Ark., AAA Three Diamond Lodging

Legend has it that several ghosts reside within the walls of the 1886 Crescent Hotel & Spa, often cited as one of the most haunted hotels in America. During construction, a workman fell to his death from the roof, landing on the future site of room 218, considered to be the most haunted room. In the late 1930s, Norman Baker leased the property for use as a hospital and health resort. Despite his lack of formal medical training or maybe because of it, many of his unfortunate cancer patients made the establishment their eternal resting place.

Bower's Harbor Inn, Traverse City, Mich., AAA Three Diamond Restaurant

Built in the 1880s and remodeled in the 1920s, this restaurant was originally a summer retreat for Chicago lumber baron J.W. Stickney and his wife Genevive. The establishment has since gained notoriety as the home to Genevive's ghost. While Genevive inherited the property on her husband's death, he left the remainder of his wealth to the nurse hired to care for Genevive, driving Mrs. Stickney into severe depression. She eventually hung herself from the rafters of the elevator shaft and, since her demise, lights have suddenly turned on, mirrors and paintings have fallen off walls, and guests have reported the appearance of a blurry female figure in their vacation photographs.

Buxton Inn-1812, Granville, Ohio, AAA Three Diamond Restaurant

Among the many owners of this former stagecoach tavern was Major Horton Buxton, who owned the inn from 1865 to 1902. He is said to still make an occasional appearance, favoring a chair by the fireplace on a chilly evening. The tavern is also haunted by the ghost of a former owner's cat. The spectral figures may be spotted by guests enjoying dinner.

The Fairmont Algonquin, St. Andrews, New Brunswick, AAA/CAA Three Diamond Lodging

Winter guests at this hotel have repeatedly mentioned seeing an older gentleman dressed like a bellman who greets them at the elevator to help with their bags. However the hotel does not employ a bellman in the winter and the gentleman doesn't match the description of anyone on staff. Perhaps he is an employee from long ago.

The Golden Lamb Restaurant, Lebanon, Ohio, AAA Two Diamond Restaurant

The Golden Lamb Restaurant is a red brick structure that opened as a stagecoach tavern in 1803. Its many celebrity guests over the past two centuries have included Charles Dickens, Mark Twain, and various presidents. One guest in permanent residence is the spirit of a little girl believed to be Sarah Stubbs, niece of former manager Isaac Stubbs Jr. Sarah grew to be an adult, but some say her ghost remains in the building. Sarah's room, located on the fourth floor, is the recreation of her childhood bedroom, named in her honor.

Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza, Cincinnati, Ohio, AAA Four Diamond Lodging

This hotel, originally opened in 1931, is reputedly haunted by the "Lady in Green" who wanders through the ornately decorated Hall of Mirrors and the Mezzanine. The lady's husband was allegedly killed in an accident during the construction of the hotel. His body was never found and her mournful spirit still seeks his remains, according to the story.

Hotel Bothwell, an Ascend Collection hotel, Sedalia, Mo., AAA Three Diamond Lodging

Built as a 119-room hotel in 1927, this establishment was the hub of society in Sedalia for many decades. In the 1980s the property was converted to an assisted living facility for 10 years before it was closed. It reopened in 1999 as the Hotel Bothwell with some challenges in the haunting department. Many occurrences of unexplained noises and sightings of objects have been reported, including the occasional apparition. The elevator has been known to operate on its own, and guests often mention missing items from their rooms. While most of the experiences happen at night, nearly every staff member has a story to tell. If a truly spooky stay is what you want, request a room on the third floor where many sightings are centered.

Hotel Provincial, New Orleans, La., AAA Three Diamond Lodging

Located in the French Quarter, this hotel was a hospital during the Civil War and there have been reported sightings of Confederate soldiers. Additionally, linens have been found to have blood stains that vanish as curiously as they appear. Some people have claimed to hear wounded soldiers cry out for help. Building Five is recommended for those wanting to experience paranormal activity.

Le Pavillon, New Orleans, La., AAA Three Diamond Lodging

Built in 1907 and located in the heart of downtown New Orleans, this hotel is often called "The Belle of New Orleans." The hotel has had many guest and staff sightings of unexplained movement. Paranormal experts have counted anywhere from four to 100 friendly spirits that want to have fun. Where else can you find ghosts and complimentary evening peanut butter and jelly sandwiches?

The Mayflower - A Renaissance Hotel, Washington, D.C., AAA Four Diamond Lodging

Strange occurrences reported at The Mayflower appear to be linked to the inauguration of President Calvin Coolidge. Coolidge did not attend his own inaugural ball in 1925 because he was mourning the death of his 16-year-old son. Every year on January 20 the lights dim and flicker at 10 p.m., the time the first guests were announced at the ball. One elevator stops on the eighth floor and refuses to move to the lobby until 10:15 p.m. - the approximate time Coolidge would leave his room to attend.

Menger Hotel, San Antonio, Texas, AAA Three Diamond Lodging

The Menger Hotel was built in the 1850s and is located next to the Alamo mission, site of a bloody battle for Texas independence. The hotel is renowned for several infamous guests who refuse to check out. Theodore Roosevelt, who makes an occasional after-hours visit to the bar, first visited the Menger in 1892, returned in 1998 to recruit his Rough Riders, and was back in 1905 for a banquet. Sallie White, a hotel employee murdered in 1876, continues to make up rooms. And the irrepressible Captain Richard King, founder of one of the world's largest ranches, is said to be seen late at night writing the memoirs he began in the late 1880s on learning of his impending death.

Omni Shoreham Hotel, Washington, D.C., AAA Four Diamond Lodging

Two mysterious deaths occurred in what is now referred to as the "Ghost" suite. The first, in 1930, was executive housekeep Juliette Brown, who apparently awoke at 4 a.m. feeling ill and died while reaching for the phone. The second was the hotel owner's adopted child, Helen. Witnesses report seeing housekeeping carts move and televisions and lights come on suddenly at 4 a.m., while guests in adjacent rooms have heard loud noises coming from the suite while unoccupied.

Stanley Hotel, Estes Park, Colo., AAA FYI Lodging and Approved Attraction

This hotel is most famous for inspiring Stephen King to write The Shining after staying at the near empty hotel with his wife the day before it closed for winter. They stayed in room 217, which they later discovered was said to be haunted. Although the Kings did not experience any paranormal activity, other guests report hearing piano music and party sounds from the empty ballroom, children running in the empty hallways, and awakening to the sight of a man standing over their bed. If you feel adventurous, stay in room 217, 401, 407 or 418, which report the most ghost sightings. Stanley Hotel History Tours are given daily.

Six Flags Parks Take Part in Thrilling World Record Attempt

Guests, characters, team members, professional dancers and novices alike all put on their dancing shoes and sequined gloves at Six Flags parks across the U.S. and Mexico on Saturday, October 24, performing "Thriller" simultaneously as part of Thrill the World, a global record-breaking attempt to recruit the most people simultaneously recreating the dance steps made famous by music icon, Michael Jackson. More than 3,100 dancers at Six Flags parks learned the moves -- erupting in a concurrent Saturday night dance party at 12:30 am GMT (8:30 pm EDT/ 7:30 pm CDT/5:30 PDT).

Thrill the World events were held at Six Flags Over Texas (Arlington, TX), Six Flags America (Bowie, MD), Six Flags Fiesta Texas (San Antonio, TX), Six Flags Great America (Gurnee, IL), Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom (Louisville, KY), Six Flags St. Louis (Eureka, MO), and Six Flags Mexico (Mexico City). The combined numbers of participants at Six Flags parks will join with participant numbers from Thrill the World events held throughout the globe to achieve the goal of 10,000 Thrill the World dancers, breaking the Guinness World Record of "Thriller" performers.

Celebrities and Thrill the World VIPs joined in the celebrations at various Six Flags parks, including Thrill the World founder Ines Markelle, who selected Six Flags Mexico for her attempt at this year's record. At Six Flags America, R&B recording artist Omarion took part following a Michael Jackson tribute event and concert at the park earlier in the day. The University of Texas at San Antonio Spirit Team lead the dance at Six Flags Fiesta Texas and the reigning Mrs. Illinois Anji Meidel danced at Six Flags Great America.

Ines Markelle, founder of Thrill the World said of her experience dancing at Six Flags Mexico, "It was the most amazing night of my life. To see that many people dancing, singing, cheering and having fun was overwhelming. I can't wait to do it again."

This is the first year Six Flags has joined Thrill the World at parks across the country. In 2008, dancers at Six Flags Great America joined more than 4,000 people from 10 nations (Australia, Canada, England, Germany, Ireland, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, New Zealand, Scotland, United States of America, and Wales) to simultaneously perform "Thriller" as part of Thrill the World.

Fright Fest presented by SNICKERSA takes place weekends through November 1 with thrills by day and chills by night. Visit sixflags.com for more information and park operating hours.

Consumers respond best to vacation ads that match current emotions

Most of us won't respond to the call of adventure while soaking in a relaxing bath. According to a new study in the Journal of Consumer Research, we're more likely to book a weekend at a spa.

"Imagine you are sitting in a bathtub, listening to calm music with gentle candlelight. Add lavender aroma. Then as you flip through a magazine, you come across an advertisement from an amusement park, promising you an exciting place full of adventurous offerings. How appealing would you find the prospect of visiting this amusement park?" write authors Hakkyun Kim (University of Concordia, Canada), Kiwan Park (Seoul National University, Korea), and Norbert Schwarz (University of Michigan).

The authors found that people evaluate vacation products with adventurous appeals more favorably when they feel excited rather than peaceful, and vice versa. They found that processing advertising claims depends much on the consistency between the message and the consumer's mood.

The authors explain that people who see an advertisement that promises an exciting vacation ask themselves, "Would this vacation really make me feel that way?" They are more likely to think a vacation will really be exciting when they currently feel excited rather than peaceful. In other words, incidental emotions influence the perceived likelihood that the product will deliver on its emotional promises: When the current emotions match the promises of the product, people infer that it may really make them feel that way; but when the current emotions mismatch the promises, the discrepancy between their current feelings and the promises suggests that the product may fail to deliver what it promises.

The researchers' results suggest that marketers can facilitate the impression that products will deliver on their promises by displaying them in contexts in which consumers' pre-existing feelings are likely to match the product's claims. "Exciting sports events are a better arena for advertising exciting vacations than for advertising serene vacations, not only because an exciting vacation may match the audience's general preferences, but also because an exciting vacation will match the audience's current feelings," the authors conclude.

Safety pledge

SAFETY will be a top priority at the Wahooo! water park when it opens at 10am today at the Bahrain City Centre mall, Seef.

A team of 66 highly trained, qualified and experienced lifeguards will patrol the attraction, understood to be the only one of its kind in the Middle East, to ensure that visitors enjoy the facilities trouble-free.

All lifeguards have gone through rigorous 48-hour training courses conducted by the UK-based Royal Life Saving Society and National Pool Lifeguard Qualification training by Dubai-based training company PRM International, who flew in experienced and qualified trainers into Bahrain from Dubai and the UK.

They have trained for 18 hours a week in life-guarding theory and pool management, aquatic rescue techniques, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and First Aid and incident management.

The lifeguards have also undergone a further 16 hours of advanced First Aid training.

Sixteen of the lifeguards have also undergone medical incident training, which includes life-saving techniques.

Safe fun was the number one priority at the Wahooo! water park, said general manager Damien Latham.

"We expect the highest level of service and quality from every member of the Wahooo! team and nowhere is this more important than the lifeguards," he said.

"We wanted them to have more than just normal training, we wanted them to be the best we could possibly offer.

"Our guests deserve to know that they are in safe hands, and the Wahooo! lifeguards can give them that confidence."

The water park is spread over an area of 15,000sqm and features a number of thrilling rides, including a 230m masterblaster roller coaster, a four-lane Mat Racer thrill ride and a Wave Rider surfing machine, which creates a 3m high static.

It also includes a curling breaker, a giant U-shaped Sidewinder ride, lounging areas, a pool to recreate an indoor beach experience, generating waves nearly 1m high, a huge tipping bucket that dumps thousands of litres of water from above, a serenely Lazy River ride and a multi-level Rain Fortress for children.

Officials would not reveal the project cost, but confirmed that the park's indoor and outdoor atmosphere would be set to 30C throughout the year, using the Middle East's only temperature control technology.

Separated by a wall of glass, both the indoor and outdoor areas will feature a mix of real and artificial sub-tropical plants to enhance the paradise, tropical island theme, centred around a moored schooner.

The Middle East's first-ever indoor-outdoor, high-rise, high thrill water park will also feature prayer rooms, a Wave Pro retail outlet for swimming gear and souvenir merchandise, 10 thrilling rides and two food and beverage outlets.

Entry will cost BD9.5 for visitors who are over 1.2m tall and BD6 for others.

Children aged below three will enter for BD3.

The park will open daily from 10am to 10pm.
